The Commercial Side of Open Source Software

· 1 min read

In most current technology stack, there is a critical open source software somewhere that the stack relies on.

Yet it is hidden from view most of the time due to modularisation and abstraction. Until it somehow stops getting updated or stops working one day.

Case in point: Bitnami containers/charts commercial shift, and the recent Ingress NGINX retirement.

I really like this quote regarding the current state of open source software, so sharing it and the article here (link in comment).

“Reality check. Behind virtually every significant open source project or artifact, there’s a company or a foundation. Someone is funding the development. Someone is making the investment. And that someone expects a return.”
